Originally, we took a PCLinuxOS base and worked from it…but over the course of the first 6-8 months of development, we realized that we weren’t going to be able to continue with the older toolchain that ships with PCLinuxOS. We moved over to a Mandriva base quickly and have all but removed all traces of our PCLinuxOS beginnings.
This is true…Unity as a project targets developers. We want to give developers a basic core platform with ‘just enough’ GUI elements wrapped around the mklivecd and remaster functions of the liveCD project. That way, you can take the tools and using our 8 thousand package repository, build your own distribution. We also will document how to give your distribution a brand identity through theming and appearance. We call derivative distributions “branches” from our original core “trunk” and we hope that lots of people see the value in being able to create a distribution with very little effort around a solid core.
