The Unity Linux project is pleased to announce its second beta
release, 2010 Beta 2. We have taken the last four weeks to provide
many needed fixes and continual updates to the core offering of our
software.
Changelog:
- Updated xorg to 1.7.3
- Fixed aufs2 for gvfs support (only effected Gnome in livecd mode)
- New kernel version 2.6.31.9
- Additional firmware
- Ndiswrapper module is fixed and working with kernels > 2.6.30
Overall there are about 200 updates since beta1
Known issues:
- Rpm5 filetriggers is not fixed yet so we still need to use
chksession -g (for gdm) or -K (for kdm4) to register new Desktop
Environment.
- Xorg-1.7.3 is not yet supported by the ATI proprietary driver, so do
not attempt to try it.
- The unstable channel is still enabled on the 32bit iso. This
channel is now obsolete since xorg-1.7.3 has been pushed into the main
repo so users are asked to delete this particular channel.
Mandriva-based Unity Linux utilizes the MkLiveCD project, which allows
developers to create their own distribution on top of a Unity Linux
core (or “trunk”). Unity Linux thus strives to provide a solid, well
maintained foundation that developers can use as a starting point to
build their own “remastered” distributions, or as we like to call
them, “branches.”
Currently, Unity Linux offers both 32-bit and 64-bit LiveCDs. Nearly
7,700 packages are available after installation. In an effort to give
distribution developers maximum flexibility, the core is kept small
and usable, but not too basic. Unity Linux provides developers with
the bare minimum– just enough to make use of remaster tools, the
smart package manager, a 2.6.31.9 kernel, and rpm5.
To facilitate easy access to packages, Unity Linux utilizes an SVN
repository for packages and internal projects. All the necessary tools
as well as a basic tutorial for building packages are already
provided. An automatic build system to work with the SVN repository is
in progress along with many other tools to make Unity the most
functional project to start a personal or professional branch.
Check our Downloads page to get the 32 bit and 64 bit LiveCDs.
This distro almost destroyed my Mint 7 installed on my hard drive it tried in install a file system I pressed the live cd option on startup and it put a .dl_ file on my system. I did recover my system back…but it was a scare..
the livecd does not install anything at all to the hard drive. It creates a ramdisk (a fake hard drive in your RAM) and only decompresses used data on the fly. You are the first person I hear of it happened to in my 5 years working on the mklivecd project.
I know the 'buntu type livecd systems do overwrite hard disk information but the mklivecd never did (localhost definition in particular). Could you please explain your steps so I can replicate it? I'll even sacrifice one system to install Mint if that helps.
Gettinther.
I concur with dennis,
The installer formats /home partition despite the partition format checkbox unchecked.
Loss of data is unavoidable
This is rather strange because Unity uses the installer from mandrake/KDE
The installer also (re)set a BIOS option
It turned the power to my optical PS2 mouse off
To repair this, I needed to physicaly reset the motherboard (restrep)
(which was a waaay back old bug in the mandriva installer)
You might need to supply a better and correct installer/formatter from mandrake/KDE
Greets, Arend.
btw, a .dl_ is a compressed .dll file, a windows file. Where did you say you saw that file?

Beta 2 looks promising. WLAN (Intel 3945) crashes, however, when configured for hidden network (WPA encryption).
Correction: WLAN is actually working.
2nd configuration attempt as root: Error message after "connect now", but otherwise no problems.
I guess that is good enough for a beta release (I have seen much worse).
Unity Linux looks excellent so far. Congratulations to the developers !
Forum is working now…
Sorry, we had an accidental data loss during a routine cleanup. All's fixed now. Some existing users might need to re-create their account if it was done recently.
I like beta 2 so far. I prefer to have a distribution that starts off minimal and I can add what i want. This is nice because its not too minimal like arch or debian minimal, yet is not bloated like most distros. It uses the apps that I prefer, i.e., pcmanfm, openbox. Good work, hope to see more releases. BTW, forum doesnt seem to be working.

has anyone been able to install/boot Beta2 on VMware? It just hangs for me. I will trying it on my laptop with VirtualBox but sadly the cpu in that laptop doesn't have the best virtualization support.
After the issues with VirtualBox had been resolved (this was an issue with their software), I had pretty much been using VB as my virtualization client. This morning I confirmed that Unite beta2 runs just fine in VB 3.1.x.
To address the VM concerns, I downloaded VMPlayer 3.0.0 and tried to run the beta2 ISO. I ran into two issues. The first is that there is a LONG (3 minute) delay early during boot sequence which results with an error message of "udevatm settle timeout". After that, the VM runs fine until X starts. This, unfortunately, results in a black screen. I tried running with framebuffer mode also – same result.
I'll mention it to Gri6507 since he is our local vmware expert. Thanks for the report

Hurray,
This is my first install Unity Linux. Thankz to all Unity Developer. I am waiting for the final release.
thanks putude, let us know if you find missing apps that should be available.
The issue with vmare is a Xorg issue. There is now a fix and xorg has updated vmware. The working version will be on the next livecd and should be available on all mirrors in the next 24h.
